Disbound, quarto (176x228 mm.). Within marbled papers. 77 pp., 3 folding plates at back. Head and tail pieces, other tables in text. ‘Spitalfields Mathematical Society’ small stamp A2 headpiece. Complete. Disbound, with contemporary marbled endpapers attached front and back showing early neat repairs. Internally: unobtrusive darkening to title, A2 small stamp, some darkening of fore-edges, marginal browning to plates. Generally very good, crisp and clean. Full text of important paper given at the Royal Society in 1759 the data of which became known as the Smeaton coefficient. Also published in ‘Philosophical Transactions' volume 51 1759-1760, as pp 100-174. Smeaton is now regarded as the "father of civil engineering". ESTC T106299
