Contemporary red calf, five raised bands to spine, compartments richly gilt, boards ruled gilt, inner dentelles gilt, a.e.g. (all edges gilt), engraved tissue protected frontis., many b/w in-text and full page illustrations, xx+312pp.. Spine edges rubbed, leading spine corner weak, a little colour bleed to front free-endpaper, light damp stain affecting preliminaries including frontis and title page. Otherwise very clean and tight. Related newspaper cutting loosely inside.
