Original blue cloth lettered in gilt, original blue stiff end-papers. Paper rough-cut as published. Ex 'Training Centre Aberdeen' with old shelf number and a few neat stamps internally. Generally a good, tight and clean copy. Used; Very Good Parallel English with phonetic texts in the pronunciation understood to have been used by Shakepeare. Hailed as "the most outstanding figure in the field of descriptive and practical phonetics", Wilhelm Viëtor, German academic and pedagogue was the main initiator of the late 19th century Reform Movement in modern language teaching. His early pamphlet "Der Sprachunterricht muss umkehren" published under the pseudonym Quousque Tandem gave voice to the general dissatisfaction in language teaching around Europe. During his working life, Viëtor collaborated with all the leading phoneticians and language teachers; Henry Sweet, Daniel Jones, Paul Passy, William Tilley, Walter Ripman to name a few.
