Teacher of Daniel Jones, celebrated phonetician and linguist, Passy founded the International Phonetic Association. This reader first appeared in 1914 and is one of a short series published by the Phonetics Department at UCL under the direction of the Daniel Jones. The series provided useful publicity for the descriptive phonetic research at the department. Both common and less well-charted languages were chosen for a balanced list.
