Description

War time Special Edition. Usual orange and white banded covers featuring Joseph Lada illustration to centre, with his illustrations throughout, and ’Kolynos’ dental cream advertisement to back. 253pp., Penguin advertising to end matter with one Cadbury’s ad.. Note at end of text ‘For the Forces’ asking readers to leave their copies at the Post Office, so that men and women in the Services ‘may enjoy it too’. Generally a good, tight copy: very slightly cocked, spine tail chipped, usual browning to page edges, one page slightly protruding. Penguin Specials first appearing in 1937 usually took a crusading centre-left stance and dealt mainly with current affairs. Schweik (Sveijk) is, unusually, fiction and was abridged to fit the Penguin Special edition..
