Two 8vo volumes in original blind-stamped, maroon buckram lettered gilt. First volume with engraved frontispiece and folding chart inside. xv+527pp. Index leaves numbered 522-527 mis-bound at front (after Contents). Second volume:17 plates (mainly folding). Owner name to plate volume f.e.p.: 'Mr Teasdale, White House, Tow Law 1878'. Text volume in slightly darker cloth, spine ends bruised, tiny nick to spine edge, tight inside and clean. Plate volume cloth lighter and now somewhat faded, plates complete. Used; Very Good Rare work on the management of Collieries, expanded version of first edition printed by David Johnston in Wishaw in 1870. Often cited in academic publications on nineteenth century mining (Wilson, 1977,Cross, 2015). As well as being an active partner of the short-lived South Cobinshaw Oil Company, Hyslop was until 1868 a partner at Brand & Hyslop, proprietors of Greenhead Colliery, Wishaw, He is listed as owner of the Hawkswoodburn mine in Scotland in 1873. He is also listed as a member of the Institute of Mining Engineers. The present work was described by the Glasgow Herald as a "valuable treatise, containing the fruits of long professional experience". Hyslop was an prolific public speaker and advocate of temperance. By the 1890s his interests appear to have been centred around the Airdrie House brickworks.
