Small 8vo., original brown buckram, spine lettered gilt, upper board lettered and stamped in blind, edges stained red, iv+260pp., 16 pp “Mr Murray’s List of School Books”. A nice copy of an early edition. Very good tight, clean copy. Neat owner name inside. Small unobtrusive mark to upper board, trivial red staining (from fore-edge) to rear endpapers. First published 1863. Sir William Smith (1813 – 1893) prominent English lexicographer noted for his advances in the teaching of Greek and Latin in schools. Smith’s (also with Th. Hall) Latin Dictionary, is still a standard work.
