Contemporary blind stamped blue cloth lettered in gilt. xxx+30+65pp.. Title to Syriac text richly decorated in gilt, blue and red. A very good bright and tight copy. Contents showing some normal damp spotting at edges, small snags at spine ends, two early 20C. decorated ex-libris plates and one more modern owner inscription. 30pp introduction and 30pp notes (in German), c. 65pp Syriac text printed using the publisher's new Syriac type. A late work by the Semitic and Oriental scholar and theologian Georg Heinrich Bernstein. According to the bookplates, this copy had been owned by two of his contemporaries (F Muehlau, Adolph Ruecker) - both scholars in similar fields. Muehlau collaborated with Gesenius on the classic dictionary. "In 1853 Bernstein published in Svo St. John's Gospel in the Harclean text from a Vatican MS., No. 271, which has neither asterisks, obeli, nor marginal notes ; but it has the vowel-points, together with Kushoi and Rucoch. This edition is accompanied by valuable critical remarks containing descriptions of some MSS., and comparisons of readings. "
