Original half leather over marbled boards, viii+332 pp., with appendices (Beilagen), coloured map and a 389 pp manuscript translation (1872) bound in. The original German first edition rebound into a folder with a contemporary manuscript translation into English bound in. Foreign Office stamp to spine and withdrawn stamp inside. The translation appears to be of about 3/4 of the text. Upper board detached (but present), backstrip mainly holding but age damaged, original leaves including appendices and map present. “The Sound Dues (Sundzoll) was a toll on the use of the Øresund which constituted up to two thirds of Denmark's state income in the 16th and 17th centuries. The dues were introduced by King Eric of Pomerania in 1429 and remained in effect until the Copenhagen Convention of 1857”. (Wiki). Regarding F.O. translations, around 1871 the more stringent examinations than previously had been introduced and candidates were expected to be able to translate from Latin, French and German.
