Original orange cloth, gilt lettered and ruled spine, decoration to upper board stamped in red, original printed dust-wrapper unclipped, 662pp., with many stylised ‘Lubok’ or folk style b/w in-text illustrations. Book in very good condition. Tight and clean. Usual browning of paper, dust-wrapper very good but a little chipped at edges. A nice copy. The Russian language’s most dearly loved folk tales collected by Alexander Afanasyev Афанасьев (1826-1871). Here translated and with commentary by influential Russian born linguist Roman Jakobson. Originally published in the U.S.. in 1945. Wonderfully illustrated by Александр Алексеев Alexander Alexeieff also known for his work in animation and as inventor of the ‘pin-screen’.
