Merian made important contributions to the study of comparative linguistics, seeking to trace all world languages back to a common source. Julius Heinrich Klaproth (Berlin, 1783 - 1835), German linguist, historian, ethnographer, author, orientalist and explorer was instrumental in turning East Asian Studies into a scientific discipline with critical methods. As an orientalist he had a good command not only of Chinese, but also Manchu, Mongolian, Sanskrit, Turkish, Arabic, Persian, and even Caucasian languages. ; Landscape format
