First volume of original 1856 first edition. Ex School of Slavonic and East European Studies. Bound in library cloth, possibly cropped, fore-edges sprinkled,usual stamps and marking to title page. The paper is of the high quality of its time and the b/w in-text etchings throughout are delightful. Collectable; Good An translation and abridgement into English of the vast three volume work first published in German between 1847 and 1852. This first volume consists of some 14 chapters. Starting out in Petersburg, the author than travels to Moscow, Yaroslaf, Vologda, Yurievetz, Nizhni Novgorod - where he meets Old Believers, Molokane and Dukhobors, travels on to Kazan where he sees the punishment of the Knout and a Tartar village. Then on to the Isthmus of the Volga, Katharinenstadt, Penza, Voronezh and Ekaterinoslaf and the Mennonites. Eventually arriving in Feodosia and Kertch.
