He had a vast vocabulary and Mirsky called him the most naturally Slavophile of Russian writers. His self-professed ambition was to catch "the bitterness and absurdity of folklore imagination". His traditional prose works set in the underworld of Russian cities gained him a great deal of publicity. Remizov was also known for his graphic design. He emigrated first to Berlin in 1921 and then settled Paris.
