Description

First English edition. vii[[i]+447 pp., epilogue with facsimile signature, in original unclipped dust-wrapper. Loosely enclosed 3 contemporary review cuttings (C. P. Snow, V. S. Pritchett in New Statesman, and Richard Newnham in Truth). In very good condition. Clean, bright and tight. First published in instalments in Novy Mir, Dudinstev’s landmark novel about an engineer opposed by bureaucrats as he seeks to implement his invention caused a sensation in the USSR. The tale became a literary symbol of the Khrushchev era although official reaction soon turned against the work and Dudintsev suffered years of poverty. In later years, however, accolade returned. In 2005, Mosfilm director Stanislav Govorukhin released the film based on the novel.
