Gorski Vijenac (in English: The Mountain Wreath) the classic of Montenegrin literature is both a poem and a play. Written by the Prince-Bishop and poet Petar II Petrovic-Njegoš in 1846 in Cetinje and published it the following year. Starting as a poetic vision it develops into a political-historical drama that expands into depictions of Montenegrin life (feasts, gatherings, customs, beliefs) and the struggle to survive the Ottoman oppression.
