Born Sophia Pestereff in 1908 in the Donetsk region. Her father was a mining engineer. After the Revolution, Sophia and her family spent some three years living in different White-held regions. In 1921, their English governess, Helen Clarke, secured them a passage to Britain where they settled. Sophia married the Georgian Prince David Wacznadze in 1944.
