Original gilt lettered and decorated maroon cloth, xvi+349 pp., 18 pp. illustrated ‘Library of Humour’ Prospectus bound in back. A very nice, bright clean and crisp copy. Barely used. Spine tail bruised. Серге́й Миха́йлович Степня́к-Кравчи́нский. Of particular interest for its introduction by the revolutionary Sergei Stepniak (Sergey Stepnyak-Kravchinsky 1851 - 1895). The translator Ethel Lilian Voynich née Boole, partner of Polish revolutionary and prominent London bibliophile and bookseller Wilfrid Voynich, was involved in pro-revolutionary activity in London and indeed learnt Russian from Stepniak. This selection comprises writings from Dostoyevsky, Gogol, Gorbunov, Ostrovsky, Shchedrin, Slyeptzov, Uspensky and Stepniak himself.
