American by birth, the critic and essayist, Logan Pearsall Smith, spent most of his life in Britain. In 1913, along with Henry Bradley, Robert Bridges and Sir Walter Raleigh he founded the 'Society for Pure English', a movement campaigning for an uncontaminated 'English'. It was supported by many of the leading writers and linguists of the day and a number of 'tracts' were published after WWI.
