Tall quarto, contemporary quarter calf, marbled boards, spine ruled gilt with morocco label, marbled endpapers, xvi+573pp., 42 b/w in-text illustrations, large folding frontis. map, tables. Leather to spine rubbed, and a little scuffed but a lovely tight copy. Opens beautifully. I: Der bulgarische Staat. II: Bulgarische Landschaften. Two bookplates (one of Bibliotèque de Jules Preux and one, Victor Albert George Child Villiers, Earl of Jersey, Osterley Park) faint remains of other library ownership with tie marks to boards, neat blue crayon line to map otherwise a very good copy of this important nineteenth century work on Bulgaria. Konstantin Josef Jireček[a] (1854 - 1918) was an historian, politician, diplomat, and Slavist. He was the founder of Bohemian Balkanology and Byzantine studies, and wrote extensively on Bulgarian and Serbian history. Jireček was also a minister in the government of the Principality of Bulgaria for a couple of years.
