Derby edition. Not dated new edition. May be 1846 (see COPAC). Wogan was a Dublin publisher at the time, Richardson published in London and Derby. Original publisher's speckled paper-covered boards, 16mo.,(18x11cm) 144pp., woodcut frontis., 10 other woodcuts, alphabet and other tables (reproduced from early but not first edition). Neat old repair to spine and inner joint now splitting. Internally scarcely used, bright and clean. Used; Good Best known of Fenning's prolific works. This edition contains: the spelling book, fables and stories, part II word lists arranged by syllable length, part III the grammar followed by natural history, geography, weights and measures, foreign words and prayers. Frontis. illustration depicts three scenes from the18th century school day, 8 moral fables illustrated with woodcuts, 2 woodcuts (lion and elephant) illustrating natural history. Certainly not for the faint hearted: one of the so-described 'natural entertaining' stories is illustrated by a woodcut of a naked child who has drowned with his naked friend being beaten by a parent!
