SMITH, Logan Pearsall.

Title English Idioms. S.P.E. Tract No. XII. The Society for Pure English.
Publisher Oxford Clarendon
Date 1923
Book ID 14839
First Edition

Original Yapp-edged paper wrappers printed in blue, 63pp.. A particularly good example of one of these scarce 'tracts'. Good. Just a little dusty, edges a little chipped but clean, tight, no tears and complete. American by birth, the critic and essayist, Logan Pearsall Smith, spent most of his life in Britain. In 1913, along with Henry Bradley, Robert Bridges and Sir Walter Raleigh he founded the 'Society for Pure English', a movement campaigning for an uncontaminated 'English'. It was supported by many of the leading writers and linguists of the day and a number of 'tracts' were published after WWI.
